The Catcher in Korean Films: KAFA 30 Years

This year’s PiFan celebrates the 30th anniversary of KAFA (Korean Academy of Film Arts), which has brought so many talented Korean directors to the fore and led the renaissance of Korean cinema through the special section: ‘The Catcher in Korean Films: KAFA 30 Years.’ KAFA represents youth in Korean films and shows Korean films of the present moment, along with aggressive experiments of imagination. Since its foundation in 1984, KAFA has turned out numerous talented directors including: Kim Uh Seok, Im Sang Soo, Lee Jeong Hyang, Hur Jin Ho, Bong Joon Ho, Choi Dong Hoon, Choi Ik Hwan, Kim Tae Yong, Min Kyu Dong to name but a few. This has enabled the development of the Korean film industry and the introduction of Korean filmmakers to the world. Also, in initiating the Research Program in 2006, KAFA has been training the next generation of Korean film-makers, including: Jo Sung Hee, Yoon Sung Hyun, Baek Seung Bin and Joung Yu Mi. The section spotlights KAFA’s 30 years in existence and will provide audiences with the precious opportunity to take a look at the past, present and future of Korean cinema: showing legendary shorts, treasured gems and new films from KAFA including: 2001 Imagine, End of Animal, Bleak Night, Members of the Funeral and Chaos 3D.
