Puchon Choice: Feature

The 12 films selected for Puchon Choice-the official competition section, gives a glimpse of the present and the future scene of genre films by showing how the genre films of various regions, such as Europe, America, South & East Asia and India has been evolving. This section includes films clearly showing new interpretations of conventional genre formula and auteurist traits, namely Haunter by Vincenzo Natali, whose previous works Cube and Splice showed variations of textbook style of horror; Lee Daniels’ The Paperboy flavored by different charms of Nicole Kidman and Zac Efron; Sebastian Hofmann’s Halley, which marks the beginning of the new genre, ‘body horror’. Meanwhile, Asian films like On the Job by Erik Matti, the leader of genre films in the Philippines; Anurag Kashyap’s Ugly, that shows new trend of Indian thriller; Countdown by Nattawut Poonpiriya, the rascal rookie from Thailand, prove ongoing leap of Asian genre films by meticulous combination of explosive energy and global cinema language.
